Family Fun on New Years Eve

When I was younger my family typically spent New Years Eve together. My parents never really went out to parties so we found ways to have a good time at home. New Years Eve was always a fun family experience. Here are some fun ways to make your New Years Eve night a family fun night.

  • Homemade Pizza - Grab some pre-made pizza crusts and your favorite toppings. Have everyone pitch in making homemade pizzas.
  • Rent a movie - Movies are a great way to pass the time until midnight. Make it a marathon of your favorite movies.
  • Game Night - After your movie is over, play some board games or social games such as Pictionary or charades.
  • Remember – Watch home movies and look at pictures from the last year.
  • Plan the New Year - Put together a family plan for the next year. Where do you want to vacation. Any home improvements to make? etc.
  • Read - Everyone take a turn reading their favorite short story
  • Video Games - Break out the video game system and play some of those great group games together.
  • Puzzles – Do a puzzle. Jigsaw, word puzzles, logic puzzles, etc.

Does your family do anything fun together on New Years Eve? Let us know by leaving a comment!

How to Explain Christmas Angels and Santa Claus to Kids

Santa Claus and children’s gifts go hand in hand during Christmas. It is a good idea to teach kids that Christmas is as much about giving as it is getting. One way to do that is the Christmas Angel program, or something similar. The program involves going to your local mall and picking out a child’s name who you will by gifts for anonymously. The child you will by gifts for come from families who have suffered hardships and cannot get gifts for their children.

While this is a great activity for your family it presents a conflict when you go and pick out your Christmas Angel just after visiting Santa Claus. There is a good chance your child will ask why Santa Claus can’t get the presents for the kids. Here are some answers that we have found to help you justify the program.

  • Pick out a Christmas Angel that wants mostly clothes, telling your child that Santa mostly brings toys.
  • Change your gift giving habit so that Santa brings one big gift. Tell your kids that you are buying all the smaller gifts that the family can’t afford.
  • Tell your children that since the kids have a hard time the rest of the year, you want to make their Christmas extra special.
  • Tell your children the truth. (This is totally your call. If your kids are smart enough to see through the other excueses, they can handle the truth.)

10 things all dads should be thankful for

Here is our list of 10 things that all dads should be thankful for.

  1. Our families Let’s face it we can’t be dad’s without kids and the kids mom. Even for those that are not together with their kids mom, we have to be thankful for bringing our kids in to the world and making us dads.
  2. Jobs What other activity allows you to get away from the family for 8-10 hours a day and get paid to do so?
  3. Sports Even if you are not a sports fan, you should appreciate how sports give you and your children a fun way to exercise
  4. Video Games Without video games most of us can’t play 18 at Pebble Beach every weekend.
  5. Synthetic Lawns Beautiful yards with no work. (For the record everyone at DailyDads.com do not have synthetic lawns)
  6. Computers Check on the scores, play games and communicate with everyone all from the same device!
  7. Friends Hanging out with guys who understand why you do guy things is a valuable balance to your relationships with women
  8. Beer Sometimes you just need a cold one, nuff said
  9. Televisions TV’s are a great break from reality. You can get lost in a sci-fi adventure, watch a game or laugh at a great comedy.
  10. Cars Even if you aren’t a car freak, imagine your life without a car. I sure don’t want to walk or ride my bike 20 miles each way to get to work everyday.

What are you thankful for?

A Veteran’s Day Story

I got this e-mail forwarded to me today and thought it would be great to share with everyone. Please make sure to share it with your kids. I don’t know the source of it so I appologize for not being able to give credit. Here it is:

A lesson that should be taught in all schools… and colleges.

Back in September, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a social studies school teacher at Robinson High School, did something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with the permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks out of her classroom.

When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks.

“Ms. Cothren, where’re our desks?”

She replied, “You can’t have a desk until you tell me how you earn the right to sit at a desk.”

They thought, “Well, maybe it’s our grades.”

“No,” she said.

“Maybe it’s our behavior.”

She told them, “No, it’s not even your behavior.”

And so, they came and went, the first period, second period, third period. Still no desks in the classroom.

By early afternoon television news crews had started gathering in Ms. Cothren’s classroom to report about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of her room.

The final period of the day came and as the puzzled students found seats on the floor of the desk less classroom, Martha Cothren said, “Throughout the day no one has been able to tell me just what he/she has done to earn the right to sit at the desks that are ordinarily found in this classroom. Now I am going to tell you.”

At this point, Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom and opened it. Twenty-seven (27) War Veterans, all in uniforms, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. The Vets began placing the school desks in rows, and then they would walk over and stand alongside the wall. By the time the last soldier had set the final desk in place those kids started to understand, perhaps for the first time in their lives, just how the right to sit at those desks had been earned.

Martha said, “You didn’t earn the right to sit at these desks. These heroes did it for you. They placed the desks here for you. Now, it’s up to you to sit in them. It is your responsibility to learn, to be good students, to be good citizens. They paid the price so that you could have the freedom to get an education. Don’t ever forget it.”

By the way, this is a true story.

Please consider passing this along so others won’t forget that the freedoms we have in this great country were earned by War Veterans.

If you are a veteran… THANK YOU!!!!

Halloween, On a Basketball Court?

Trick-or-treating is an activity that so many of us enjoy. If you are a kid, there is nothing better than going house to house and having someone drop a piece or two of delicious candy in your bag. You get to pretend you are a great superhero or a princess and show it off to the whole neighborhood. As an adult I have enjoyed it the last few years as well. I enjoy watching my son getting dressed up and taking him around to all of the different homes in the neighborhood. We typically get together with some friends making it a social experience for everyone. The kids get to trick-or-treat while the adults get to walk and talk while gathering memories of their kids in costumes.

A couple days ago my wife told me about an event they are holding in our neighborhood. Instead of going door to door, you can meet up at the basketball court with a lawn chair and candy. The kids can then go around to each lawn chair to trick-or-treat. This in my opinion is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard of. How lazy can we as people get? Are we too lazy to get up and answer the door? Do we have to literally have the kids come to our seat so we don’t even have to stand up? As an adult one of the fun parts of passing out candy is being suprised by the next set of costumes. There isn’t much of a suprise when you see them three chairs to your left coming your way. Are we too lazy to walk around the block a couple of times with out kids? Halloween is good exercise for both us and our kids. We can’t have that! We must sit on our lawn chairs and limit our kids to walking only the length of a basketball court…much further would just put too much stress on their little bodies.

I realize this plan is “safer”, however in my opinion it is completely unecessary. In our neighborhood parents are out with their kids keeping an eye out on them as they go house to house. There are always plenty of kids out so all drivers tend to pay extra attention. This basketball court trick-or-treat takes away from some of the great things about trick-or-treating. My family will not be attending this event. If there is no one home I will take my son to the neigborhood across the street. We will trick-or-treat the right way!
